Mexican culture is a celebration of life.

Everyone has something they obsess over, or collect, or love. I do not think that anyone will ever understand my obsession for Mexico and its culture. I have never actually traveled there although I would love to. It really started in art school in my last year. We were given a self-assigned project. I took it upon myself to make 4 editorial pieces that had to do with the sound track of the film "Frida" starring Salma Hayek as Frida Kahlo. I had been listening to the sound track because I loved old mariachi/salsa/folk music and Frida Kahlo's work and had connected with it beforehand.
After having created these 4 paintings, I fell in love with everything about Mexico. Their music made me feel alive as cheesy as it sounds, and their art was so bright and colorful, even their "Dia de los Muertos" or "Day of the Dead" was beautiful. I was born in Stockholm, Sweden but I have more of a connection with Mexican culture over my own.
It's funny, I guess I never thought I would feel so connected with this culture, and I know the day I go to visit, it will be the most amazing experience for me.

These pictures are of my kitchen, which I decided to make a Mexican theme. The paintings above the mantle are painted by me from '02 and '08 and the little figures on the mantle are from a thrift store down the street from me. Some of the paintings are from school, and some are from my Mexican solo exhibit in '08. There is this amazing store in Philadelphia, not far from where I live called Eye's Gallery. They sell all imported goods from Mexico that they hand pick themselves, and it is owned by Isaiah Zagar who is a renowned mural mosaics artist here in Philadelphia. I had my solo show at his gallery space, and he purchased one of my paintings.
I am currently working on my solo exhibit for April which is a Mexican culture series. I will post the paintings as soon as they are hung up at the gallery by then. I am wondering and hoping there are people out there like me who appreciate Mexican culture as much as I do.
